How to Start a Blog for Free and Make Money in 6 Easy Steps
Making money online is easy if you stick with it (commit) and follow my lead. I’m going to take you step-by-step, and walk you through the easiest way I know to get your BLOG up and running TODAY!
When you’ve followed the steps here, you’ll be on your way to a better life… more money… and more FREE time to spend it all.
You just need 3 things to be seen and get found on the web, and those are:
- A Domain Name. The website address that people go to in order to find you. For example, my domain name is www.becomea6figurewoman.com
- Web Hosting. This is required to host your website on the internet so that people can visit it. *You can purchase your domain name and hosting at the same company. (See Steps 2 and 3 Below for my personal recommendations)
- WordPress. This is what will help you run your website, this free software will allow you to add, edit and delete pages and posts on your website. You can easily customize it with a free or paid theme (see my offer below under Steps 2 and 3 for a FREE install). You also can customize it with plugins.
Setting up the above 3 items will take you less than 10 minutes
. It’s very easy when you have step-by-step instructions and you know the right tools to use. I have created a video on YouTube showing you HOW TO BUILD A BLOG IN LESS THAN 4 MINUTES…including “installing” a professional paid theme.

These are the 6 Steps for you to Start A Blog and to Start Making Money:
STEP 1: Write a Tagline for your new Blog. It’s critically important that you service a need of a group of people who use the Internet to meet that need.
Write a 1 sentence tagline about your blog and be able to recite it by memory. Having a clearly defined purpose for your blog from day 1 is paramount to your success. Before you do anything, I want you to answer these 2 questions: Who is my ideal audience? What problem is my blog going to solve for them? Don’t over think this. It’s very simple. You want to create a blog that fulfills a real need and solves a real problem. You also want to personalize your blog with YOU and let people know why you are the perfect person to help them solve their problems. Once you have the 1 sentence tagline for your blog, memorize it and be able to recite it verbatim when someone asks “So what’s your Blog about?”
Here are a few examples of taglines from real blogs I’ve come across:
- http://www.bakeorbreak.com/ “Adventures of an Amateur Baker“;
- http://www.home-ec101.com/ “Skills for Everyday Living”;
- http://whatwouldanerdwear.blogspot.com/ “An Archive of a Grad Student Style”
- http://www.nomadicmatt.com/ “Travel Better, Cheaper, Longer”;
- http://becomea6figurewoman.com/ “Where Smart Women Come to Learn How to Make Money Online”.
That should get you started with some ideas! Next…
STEP 2: Decide on Your Domain Name (**purchase it with your hosting package in Step 3).
There are a couple of schools of thought on selecting a domain name for your blog. One is to include the “keyword” that people would be searching for on Google to find you and the other is not to focus on keywords, but on a more descriptive name that may be cute, clever, endearing, fun, funny, etc. It’s really up to you. There are many successful blogs that have the keywords in the domain name and many that don’t. Just make sure that when you say the domain name it’s not too hard for the average person to understand what it means. For example, my blog is “Become a 6-Figure Woman” and when I say that I don’t need to explain it. People get it. Or one of my favorites is Yaro Starek’s blog: http://www.entrepreneurs-journey.com/ And Yaro has a great tagline on his blog which is “Down to Earth Tips and Advice for Internet Entrepreneurs”! Simple and easily understood.
STEP 3: Get Your Own Hosting for Your Blog
I highly recommend you have your own domain and hosting for your Blog. The “hosting” account is simply where your blog resides. There are “FREE” ways to put up a blog, but I don’t recommend them and here’s why:
- When you create your blog with one of these FREE blog sites, they always include extra wording in the domain name that makes it sound “unprofessional”. For example, if I created the Become a 6-Figure Woman blog on Blogspot, the web address would be http://becomea6figurewoman.blogspot.com/ instead of http://www.becomea6figurewoman.com
- You aren’t able to advertise on many of these sites (ie., make money) and you are limited to what you can do as far as really customizing and personalizing the site.
*For these reasons I recommend that you go with a self-hosted website with a reputable hosting company. A domain name will cost you around $10 and the hosting package will be under $5 per month.

WordPress is awesome! I used to have a very old, outdated HTML site that didn’t get much traffic and then I switched to WordPress and I doubled my traffic and my income! WordPress is free to install and then you can customize it with a “theme” (paid or free) and by adding what are called “plug-ins”. When you use my Bluehost link above, I’ll install WordPress (and the paid theme of your choice as noted above), then I will also email you the top 10+ Plugins I use on all of my sites. Now I won’t be installing the plugins for you or writing the content, but it’s very simple for you to do yourself; and will save you lots of money!
STEP 5: Start Writing Strategic/Keyword-Rich Blog Posts
Since your blog is new, you really need to start driving traffic to it right away. As an amateur, you would probably just pick out some titles and subjects and start writing random blog posts for your new site. I want you to do what the Professionals do and research the proper keywords BEFORE you write your blog posts.
Let’s say I want to write a blog post about “starting a blog“. First, I would go to Google’s Keyword Planner (FREE) and I would type in “Start a Blog“; next I would get a list of dozens of keyword phrases that show the number of searches per month globally and locally for those keyword phrases.
For this example, I decide to go with “How to Start a Blog and Make Money” because longer keyword phrases are better than shorter, broader ones. For example, there are 200,000 searches per month for “start blog” which means my site would get lost in those numbers and people most likely wouldn’t find this article and my site. So I decide to go with “How to Start a Blog and Make Money” which has only 2,400 searches per month. Less is more and I would rather have this targeted traffic to my site.
So start writing blog posts that not only give unique and well written information, but that helps your audience solve their problems! And remember, in order to be successful and to drive traffic to your blog, you must write on a regular, consistent basis!
